Washing a driveway is satisfying and hard to ruin. Stucco and old redwood are another matter. A tip held too close cuts lines into the finish that no amount of rinsing puts back, and on painted siding you end up repainting the wall you meant to clean. We drop the pressure and let the soap work on anything soft. Mineral-heavy tap water bakes scale onto concrete and glass, so those spots get a cleaner rather than more pressure. Roofs we leave alone. Pressure on tile or composition forces water up under the courses, and the leak shows up in a bedroom ceiling two storms later.
Lights, sprinklers, ladders
Holiday lights go up on clips, and if your only exterior outlet is inside the garage, get an electrician out before December. We never nail through tile, and we work from a ladder at the eave instead of walking a pitched tile roof, so a second-story roofline may be a no from us. Sprinkler repair, $120–$450, covers heads, risers, broken laterals and a controller that lost its schedule. We stop at the valve, since the meter and the backflow device belong to a plumber. Grit from a broken lateral plugs the heads downstream, so we flush the line before we leave.
