My landlord hasn't fixed it. Should I hire someone myself?
Ask your landlord in writing first. Under Santa Monica rent control, a tenant can petition for a rent decrease once 30 days have passed since the written notice, and the Board won't grant one if the tenant paid for the repair. We work for whoever books, but that route is worth knowing.
How much notice does a tenant get before you come in?
State law requires the landlord to give at least 24 hours' written notice to enter for repairs, unless it's an emergency.
I live on a permit street. How do I get your van a pass?
A resident with a preferential parking permit can print a one-day temporary permit, valid until 9 a.m. the next morning. It doesn't cover curb markings, alleys, meters or street sweeping.
