Plumbing here gets complicated because of the age of what sits behind the fixture. A 1931 house in Mar Vista has galvanized supply and cast iron drains, and the metal is thinnest right at the threads. You get a flat price first. Start at the shutoff
The angle stops under old sinks and toilets have not been turned in twenty years. Turn one now and the packing gives up, so there is a slow weep that was not there this morning. We check the stop before we touch the fixture. Seized stop, water off at the street, small job. Galvanized supply flaking at the threads above it, and at that point you want a licensed plumber, because a faucet swap has turned into repiping and we do not repipe. Condo owners carry a third problem, since the building may own the shutoff and somebody has to warn the neighbors before the riser goes down.
Disposals and the flange
A disposal hung a few degrees out of true will run fine for a while. It hums, you stop hearing it, and then the sink flange weeps into the cabinet and you find out because the plywood swelled. We swap units on setups that already exist, and we leave gas alone, so a connection at a range or a wall heater goes to a licensed plumber before anybody puts a wrench on it. Doing the disposal right is patience with the mounting ring and the putty, then a real test with the trap full of water and a flashlight under the cabinet while it drains.
