Old tile rarely comes off clean. It takes some drywall paper with it, so we patch or skim the torn spots until the wall is flat again. A soft or water-stained section behind a sink gets cut out and replaced instead of tiled over. Peel-and-stick panels come off easier, though the adhesive left behind has to be scraped before thinset will bond.
Tile adds thickness to the wall, so outlet boxes end up sitting too deep. We fit box extenders so the covers sit flush and the devices stay solid. The top row gets cut tight to the upper cabinets. Where tile meets the countertop we use caulk rather than grout, since that joint moves and grout there cracks.
A range wall usually has no upper cabinets, so the tile needs a stopping point of its own. Carried up to the hood, or all the way to the ceiling, it looks planned. Stopped at the cabinet line with a strip of painted wall above the stove, it looks unfinished. Where a window sits in the backsplash, the tile either wraps into the opening or stops at the trim, and we'll show you both before the first cut.
