Drywall or plaster? That comes first
About 23% of Santa Monica homes (12,157 of 53,274) were built in 1949 or earlier, and 37% (19,530) before 1960, by the Census Bureau's estimates for 2020 to 2024. In buildings that old, many walls are plaster on wood lath rather than drywall, and plenty have drywall only in the rooms someone remodeled later.
It matters because a patch mixed for one opens up again on the other. A thumbtack in a hidden spot tells you which you have: it goes into drywall with light pressure and refuses on plaster. Plaster costs more to patch, because it takes more coats, each one has to dry, and the repair has to key into the lath rather than sit on it.
